Quick note to all readers here
Thursday, July 24, 2008 1:36 pm - Christine Briel  0 Comments | 19 views

Hello all, this is Chris Briel. I recently noticed that our blog’s Business Directory page was not working, and I’m not sure how long it was like that. I have been busy with a new project over the last month or so and usually only work on SkaneatelesTalk 1 time a week. Please if anyone notices something that isn’t working properly, don’t hesitate to shoot me an e-mail. It won’t be looked at as annoying, exactly the opposite :)

Thanks and the Business Directory is currently working.

Fabulous Foodie Fourth
Thursday, July 24, 2008 12:07 pm - Christine Briel  0 Comments | 40 views

Below is an article originally published in the Marcellus Observer, I obtained it from the writer Ann Ferro as it can not be found on the web anywhere. Here is the original article for your reading pleasure…

- When we were kids we celebrated the Fourth of July in the back yard of my grandmother’s bungalow in Carmel. It was a simple affair, casually done around a a pile of stones that served as a fireplace and an old 1935 Ford that died after a trip down from my Aunt Lucy’s who lived in Cocksakie. The black Ford sat there, gathering moss, mold and a hefty collection of spider webs and their ominous architects. My mother had set rows of potted geraniums as guards along each running boards in order to dissuade her curious children from trying to enter the derelict vehicle. How can I say this? OK You would never find a picture of this yard in any country magazine. I am not saying that back yard was less than chic, but it had a certain Appalachian joie de vivre and we loved it. My mother was less enthusiastic.

We would toast marshmallows, drink home made root beer and watch my father put on a fireworks display with background “music” provided by my mother who was sure that someone was going to lose a body part. Each year we heard stories of someone we knew or someone that she had read about in the Daily News who was disfigured by fireworks, and, if they were lucky, facing life with only one of something that ordinarily came in pairs. I don’t think anyone ever mentioned Thomas Jefferson, although they should have.

This year, after years of not doing too much and thinking about what the anniversary of our country’s Independence means, we will find something more appropriate to do. Given things as they are, this is the year to celebrate some of the good things that we have like each other, friends and family, a stable internet connection, enough gas to get out to camp and back, etc. read more

Stained glass

Liz and Rich Micho of Marietta specialize in a wide variety of stained glass artwork, ranging from large, intricate window panels with a traditional feel, to smaller suncatchers of all subject matter. One of their specialties that they are well-known for is their colorful stained glass “garden art.”

Garden art is created by selecting special pieces of stained glass, including round nuggets, agates (sliced stones), bevels, and even antique depression glass, placed in a mosaic fashion surrounded by a wrought iron garden stake. Each piece of glass for ‘garden art’ is hand cut, and then hand foiled and hand soldered. The solder is then coated with a black patina. You’ll find very abstract, free-form colorful designs in these outdoor ornaments, as well as more refined styles.

Liz and Rich take great pride that they can offer a piece of art that is truly one of a kind. They feel they are best presented in natural surroundings, such as a garden, where they are winter hardy and will add a burst of color to our very white and gray snowy upstate NY winters, but they have also found that many of their patrons choose an indoor or patio setting. Anywhere the light shines through them is a perfect location. Each piece has a unique name which adds to their enjoyment while creating them.

Free-standing stained glass used as an element of garden design is a novel idea which they have not encountered elsewhere. Liz and Rich’s hope is that they bring beauty and a touch of whimsy to your home or garden!

Contemporary art quilts, handbags and scarves

Holly Knott’s contemporary art quilts, handbags and scarves are featured at Skaneateles Artisans this month. Holly works in a wide variety of media, including fabric, photography, watercolors, acrylics, hand-painted furniture and website design. Inspiration for her artwork comes from her surroundings, including her love of colonial and victorian architecture, cityscapes, rural landscapes, historical sites, cottage gardens, nature, and the enchantment of nearby riverside and lakeside towns.

Many of her pieces are inspired by the Finger Lakes – small framed sunset scenes and landscapes using hand-dyed fabric are a specialty of hers, as well as larger designs that highlight the beauty of our rural farmland. Her art allows her to record some spectacular part of life, such as a stunning sunset, the curvy lines of a closeup of a leaf, the dappled light in tree leaves, lavender-blue shadows on snow, peeling paint on a rusty red barn, architectural ornaments on old city buildings, colorful reflections in glass, or the pattern created by ripples of water lapping at a shoreline. She considers art quilting to be a method of “creating paintings with a fabric palette.” The wide variety of “painterly” fabrics available, such as the batiks and hand-dyed, provides her with a wonderful palette. You can create layers of color and add sparks of light just as you would with paint. There’s a challenge in creating a piece of art with only commercially available fabrics, but if she can’t find fabric to fit her needs, she will paint or dye her own. After the initial design is completed, she incorporates thread work using a variety of colored threads to add another layer of color, texture and design. read more

The REAL story on my “ARREST” PART 1:
Wednesday, July 23, 2008 10:49 pm - Greg Simmons  1 Comment | 43 views

Contributed by: Greg Simmons

My Name is Greg Simmons. I’ve lived in Skaneateles since 1958. I attended SCS from 1st grade through my senior year, where I graduated with honors. Some of you readers may know me from my columns (yes, I did discover jellyfish in the lake in August of 2006 - my first column) in the Skaneateles Journal and through my reporting there as well. I’m a huge proponent for maintaining the water quality of Skaneateles Lake and the character of our unique village. Skaneateles is my home town and my family’s home town.

As you may or may not know, I was “ARRESTED” last Saturday evening at 10:30 for an alleged DWI, Refusal to take a breath test, DWI of over .08 (.11 is what the machine claimed) and a blown head light. I’ve been emailing my friends and colleagues to give my side of the evening’s events. Because my case is pending, I have to leave many important details out at this time. However, I have been researching this very topic for several weeks for a future column, and when the dust settles on this fiasco, I’ll report on the whole situation in as much detail as possible.

That being said, since the news of my arrest is in print in The Skaneateles Journal, which I regularily contribute to, I feel compelled to respond in a public forum. I can’t say much at this point, but I feel it’s safe to say that the charges are false, with the exception of the blown headlight.

Being a police officer is a tough job. It takes experience and good judgment to interpret events and proceed in a fair and proper manner. Once I relate the events of the evening in a future blog, I’ll let my fellow residents judge as to whether or not I was treated fairly.

My wife and I were in the village for one hour, from 9:30 to 10:30, at the Sherwood Inn tavern last Saturday (July 19th) in hopes of locating a friend of ours whom we hadn’t seen for a few weeks. I can’t comment on what we consumed there at this time, but I can say it wasn’t 12 beers, 10 glasses of wine or 9 mixed drinks, which is what it would take to cause a 170 lb. man (ME) to blow a .11 on a BAC machine after drinking for 5 hours.

When we started the car after leaving the Sherwood to head home, one of our halogen headlights apparently blew out. Since the village is well lighted, we had no idea our light was out. We headed west on Genesee Street and took a left on Rt. 41 A to reach our home four miles to the south. After turning onto 41A, it occurred to us to see if our friend was home at his apartment on Kane Avenue. We turned into the complex, parked our car in the parking lot and got out.

The evening then took a nasty turn.

While driving, I had noticed an unusual sound which seemed to be coming from the front driver’s side wheel. While Maria was checking for her purse for her cell phone, I was bent over looking at the wheel for debris etc. when we were suddenly surrounded by two Skaneateles Police cars. One north of us and one south.

To be continued…
